The three laboratory reports shown here were written early on in a Twenty First Century OCR exam board GCSE Chemistry course (secondary school year 10). The aim of the task is to stimulate students’ thinking around practical laboratory work and different ways of collecting data and investigating phenomena. The task set was to investigate rates of reaction.
The outcome of the task is predictable; students know what is going to happen but what the tutor is interested in is how imaginative students can be in developing different ways of (different procedures for) collecting data. Students carry out a trail run of the experiment, evaluate the results and make changes to the procedures. The tutor is interested in how innovative students can be in thinking of changes to the procedures that will enable the student to collect more reliable data.
