The module is delivered through weekly tutorials and project work. During the module, students are required to work in groups and complete three tasks which involve investigations on the topics provided by the tutor. This academic year, for example, the three tasks related to new advances in nanotechnology, invisibility cloaking and its theoretical concept and providing efficient communication spectrum through ‘smart radios’.
Each task requires students to do background research by surveying the literature, synthesising information and producing a group report based on their work. Students are supposed to act as consultants advising a client (which could be the government or a private company), so the reports they produce at the end would usually include clear recommendations for their ‘client’. The groups need to deliver a clear recommendation on what is the best way forward based not only on hard facts or information they gathered but also on their own analysis. This builds on the expertise and skills they have developed so far in the degree programme and also on their ability to construct a logical argument.
