The first stage of the TfL graduate recruitment process is an online application form. On this form are 3 competency based questions. Question 2 is:

This question asks about your drive and determination when working towards an objective.
Please tell me about a time when you faced a number of competing deadlines and objectives, all of which were important.

  • How did this situation arise?
  • What were you trying to achieve?
  • What did you do?
  • What impact did the competing deadlines and objectives have on your motivation?
  • What was the outcome?
  • Looking back, what if anything would you do differently?

The question asks for candidates to show practical examples of their ability to perform well and to achieve results. The answer should be carefully structured to ensure all points above are covered.

Step 2

Applicant Question 2

I faced many competing deadlines and objectives at university. I was challenged with a hectic work schedule from university together with the demands of my sporting competition training. My aim was to consistently achieve high grades, whilst fully preparing myself for the competition.

Time management proved to be the catalyst of my success, which meant planning and prioritising in advance, and setting myself smaller goals over the course of the year. Progress of both my studies and competition training were constantly being monitored against goals that I set earlier. Training for a competition was not always going to be enjoyable, but visualizing myself crossing the finishing line was a huge motivational factor in pushing myself to train harder. This was also true with my academic achievements, where I was intent on receiving grades that I would be pleased with.

Unfortunately it was an injury that prevented me from completing the competition just two months before. However, I did manage to achieve the grades that I set out to attain. If I were to do anything different, it would have been to plan further, because I believe organization plays a pivotal role in success.
